Replaced my new church | |
T Gillies (builder). The new church is situated about half-a-mile back from the public school on tho old Cleveland-road. The site is on tho slope of a small ridge and in the centre of a neighbourhood which will probably soon be well populated, as a major portion of the land in the immediate vicinity has been sold for building purposes. The structure is of wood, with shingled roof. The front is particularly attractive. Tho entrance is reached by a flight of nine steps; above these are the ornamental porch with its gabled roof; the three-light central window; the overhanging eaves of the roof, and the short steeple or belfry which gives a capital finish to tho whole. Tho chief interior decorations, which are in excellent taste, consist of soft tints, of which French gray is used tho most freely. These tints blend admirably with the light shining through the stained glass windows. Tho platform is placed tinder a large alcove, measuring about 15ft. or 20ft. across. The railing in front of the platform and tho communion table fittings are done in polished cedar, and the seats in the church in pine. There is sitting accommodation for about 130 persons. Attached to the building at tho back is a roomy vestry. Tho ventilation appeared yesterday morning to be mple. Cost £1000 (Brisbane Courier 14 Jun 1886) |
